3-Feet from Gold
I think one of the more challenging things that happens to us as men is we tend to get in our own way sometimes. Maybe we overthink things, or in some cases, maybe we believe things that just aren’t true.
I’ll be vulnerable with you today because I think it’s important for you to know that we all have challenges, but we may be closer than we think to success.
I’ve lived much of my life from the standpoint of, I want to avoid difficult and challenging situations. As a result, I’ve often lived life in reverse. Here is what I mean by that. Oh crap, has often been my starting point.
But, If I start from a place of I’m going to have some challenges and I know difficulties are coming my way, I’ve started from an entirely different perspective. In addition, I’ve freed myself up to take action, take back control, and adjust to the situation.

If you live in a place where you are waiting for the next shoe to drop and reacting, you are living in a small story and starting from a small place. Now, I’m not pointing fingers, I get it I’ve been there. Why have I gone there, it’s easy, quick, and sometimes it just felt easier to throw the bedsheets over my head and crawl back into bed. But it’s hard to make breakthroughs in your life with the sheets over your head.
Men, what I have learned by going through the same coaching practices that I use with my clients, is that crazy stuff is going to keep coming at you. Let it! Have a plan and strategy when it does and push through it and don’t give in. Perseverance is one of the keys to breakthroughs in life.
In his book Think and Grow Rich, Napoleon Hill tells a story about a minor “3 feet from gold.” The minor, R. U. Darby heads out west during the gold rush to mine for gold.
After mining away at a Colorado gold mine for many months, he finally quit. He sold all of his machinery and equipment to a “junk man” who sought counsel prior to resuming digging. His engineer advised him that gold would be found just 3 feet from where the previous miner had stopped.
And do you know what? He was right. The first miner was literally three feet from striking gold – and he quit.
There are many lessons to be had from this story, but what I’m getting at today is this: that most people give up right before the gold because it gets TOO hard. Embarrassingly enough, I will admit to having stopped on things in my life 3 feet from gold. So close to a breakthrough, so close from success.
You are so close to your breakthrough, and like the miner, you may not even know it. But I can see it, and it’s right around the corner. You have the power to create the change that you want, so push through, make it happen – and enjoy your gold mine.
Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge Him, and He will make your path straight. — Proverbs 3:5
