What is the truth?
Some might say truth is something we’ve created, and others think it's waiting to be discovered. Who decides from topic to topic, and who wins in a world where the truth is always questioned? From God, to vaccines, to the color of your shoes. The search for truth, are there absolute truths or just opinions about everything?
Even the most optimistic person would have to describe the current environment, from soup to nuts in our country, as confusing. Especially in terms of what is truth and whom you believe in almost anything thing. Personally, I find this deflating and mostly depressing. As I’ve talked with others, many people share this sentiment.
The search for truth can certainly be philosophical in nature. Nobody captured philosophy on truth like Essayist Ralph Waldo Emerson. Emerson said, “Every violation of truth is not only a sort of suicide in the liar but is a stab at the health of human society.”

Ouch, a liar is a sort of suicide. In many respects, I think he’s right. Think about it, does it feel like you sell your soul out when you’re not honest and authentic? Do you wear a mask? Are you posing around other people? Or are you keeping it real with people? Are you living a life of integrity?
If you’re not living a life of integrity with positive energy, Emerson has something to say about that as well, “A man is what he thinks about all day long.”
What are you thinking about? What are you dreaming about? Equally important, what do you read? What do you listen to? Who do you surround yourself with? When searching for the truth, who and what can you depend on?
So, what is truth, one theologian I read said a simple definition drawn from what the Bible teaches: Truth is that which is consistent with the mind, will, character, glory, and being of God. Even more to the point: Truth is the self-expression of God. That is the biblical meaning of truth. Because the definition of truth flows from God, truth is theological.
Most Christians have heard these two verses:
“I am the way, and the truth, and the life.” John 14:6
“And you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.” John 8:32
Is the truth your favorite news channel or paper? Is the truth what you read on social media? Is the truth coming from politicians? Probably not! However, if we read and are in scripture, the Bible makes it perfectly clear where, how, and whom all truth flows.
